Daughters of Reykjavík (a.k.a. Reykjavíkurdætur or rvkdtr) is an Icelandic hip-hop & rap collective created in 2013 by Blær Jóhannsdóttir and Kolfinna Nikulásdóttir. The band members have varied throughout time and were at least 20 at one point. Now, the members are eight women, four of which have been in the band since the beginning. Being an all-female band, feminism is the base on which they build their art.
Their lyrics are usually about sex, partying, politics and gender stereotypes. Although that might be business as usual in the rap scene, coming from a group of unapologetically blunt women is refreshing and empowering.
The Daughters come from diverse backgrounds, and some are more than musicians. In the group there is a radio host, sex therapist, graphic designer, sound engineer, glacier guide and some actresses, to name a few.
Daughters of Reykjavík have made three studio albums, the latest being Soft Spot (2020). At one point they even made a play for The Reykjavík City Theatre
They are notorious for their energetic stage performances as Barcelona fans might have seen at the Mercé festival in 2017. In 2019 the Daughters won the MME awards (EBBA awards) at the Eurosonic festival along with Rosalia and Bishop Briggs.
