The Swedish Film maker Ruben Östlund won the Palme d’or this year in the Cannes film festival, for his movie Triangle of Sadness. By doing so, he became the ninth film director in the history of the festival to win this award two times. In 2017 he won for the movie The Square.

Östlund was born in Styrsö, Gothenburg in 1974. His first steps into film making were after high-school when he was working in ski resorts in the Alps and was filming his friends making ski stunts. Thanks to those recordings he got accepted into Gothenburg film school.

After film school he made a few movies, all received well but it wasn’t until in 2014 that he got international attention with the film Force Majeure.

Force Majeure is a black comedy drama that was acclaimed upon release. It follows the marital tension resulting from an avalanche in the Alps, during which the husband prioritizes his own escape over the safety of his wife and two children. An English-language remake of the film starring Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, titled Downhill, was released in 2020.

In 2017, his film The Square, loosely inspired by some of his own experiences and art installation, won the Palme d’Or. Last weekend his newest film, Triangle of Sadness, a film about fashion models on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, also granted him the Palme d’Or in Cannes. It seems like Östlund’s skilful usage of satire and black humour is serving him well.

Hopefully Triangle of Sadness comes in movie theatres in Spain soon, so we can see it for ourselves.
