N°117 The National Film School of Denmark

The National Film School of Denmark (Den Danske Filmskole) is one of Scandinavia’s top film schools. It was established in 1966 and it’s Denmark’s only public run film school at a higher educational level. It has eight fields of study: Script writing, sound, editing, fiction directing, documentary directing, animation and games directing, cinematography and film producing. To be accepted, all students must speak Danish and pass an entrance test including both practical exercises and interviews.

The school’s educational framework builds on both theoretical and practical training and includes many exercises and productions. There are only around 100 students in the entire school and new students are admitted every other year, six in each academic department. All lines of study are 4-year programmes, except animation and games directing which is a four a half year long program. The graduation project is always a film produced on a professional level and presented to the public on national TV in Denmark.

The school has an impressive list of alumni that includes Lars Von Trier, Billie August, Per Fly, Susanne Bier and Thomas Vinterberg, to name a few.
