Nina Canell is a Swedish sculpture and installation artist, currently she lives and works in Berlin. Her work concentrates on the physical and chemical characteristics of poorer materials such as small branches, melon seeds, glass jars, and electric cables.
Canell’s art embodies what she calls an “interchanging state”, or rather a process. This is done through the transformative effect of animating the objects and materials used in her art. Further, her work explores the relationships held between us as humans, the objects that surround us, and events that take place in our life.
Although she grew up in Sweden, Canell attended art school in Dublin at the Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology. Currently, her art is featured in solo exhibitions around Europe from London to Germany, and Ireland. Exhibitions include The New Mineral, Five Kinds of Water, and Energy Budget.
Throughout the entirety of her career she has often collaborated with Robin Watkins. Both have been successful in releasing several film works and musical recordings. What Watkins and Canell are best known for in their work are their use of unorthodox materials and their use of music as instruments of transformation.
