Neneh Cherry is a Swedish singer-songwriter, rapper and DJ. Her musical career started in London in the early 1980s, where she performed in several punk and post-punk bands, including The Slits and Rip Rig + Panic.
Cherry was born in Stocholm in 1964, as Neneh Mariann Karlsson. She comes from an artistic family. Her mom was a Swedish painter and textile artist, her dad was a musician from Sierra Leone, the son of a tribal chief and her brother is the musician Eagle-Eye Cherry.
In the early 1970s, the family moved to the United States, but Cherry dropped out of school and moved to London when she was 15, in the midst of the punk era. She remembers finding “her people” there.
Cherry has been a member of various bands but has released five studio albums under her own name. Her first, Raw Like Sushi, was released in 1989 and peaked at number three on the UK Album Chart, thanks in large part to the worldwide hit single “Buffalo Stance”. Her other albums a Homebrew (1992), Man (1996), Blank project (2014) and the most recent one Broken Politics (2018)
Cherry’s biggest international hit until now is “7 Seconds“, a song released in 1994 which she performed with co-writer Youssou N’Dour. The song achieved much success, reaching the number-one position in numerous countries; in France it stayed at number-one for 16 weeks, a record at the time. 7 Seconds also won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song of 1994. Besides that, Cherry has won two Brit Awards and been nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist (1990).
