In Norse mythology the norns are female beings who rule the destiny of a child at birth, much as the Moirai do in Greek myth. They live under the roots of the tree Yggdrasill, pour water over them from the Well of Urðr, and carve each human destiny into those roots. Even the gods cannot influence their decisions, so requests are addressed directly to Urðr, Verðandi and Skuld.
